When homeowners in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and across Palm Beach County ask about blown-in insulation, one of the first questions is: "Should I use fiberglass or cellulose?" Both are excellent materials. But South Florida's specific climate conditions make one a better fit for most homes in our area.

Here's an honest comparison.

The Basics: What Each Material Is

Fiberglass blown-in insulation is made from spun glass fibers — the same material as traditional batt insulation, but processed into loose, fluffy form for blowing. It's inorganic, meaning it won't rot, mold, or decompose.

Cellulose blown-in insulation is made from recycled paper (typically 75–85% post-consumer content) treated with borate compounds for fire and pest resistance. It's one of the most environmentally friendly insulation options available.

Cellulose achieves the same R-value in less depth. This matters in attics with limited headroom or where you want to maximize R-value without adding excessive weight.

Moisture Resistance: Critical in South Florida

Fiberglass: Inorganic and inherently moisture-resistant. It does not absorb water, does not support mold growth, and dries out without losing R-value after minor moisture exposure.

Cellulose has a slight edge in natural air sealing due to its denser packing. The material settles into gaps and crevices more completely.

Fiberglass is lighter and may leave small gaps around irregular penetrations if not installed carefully.
